James E. Rabine, II 84 of New Cumberland, peacefully passed away, Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at his home. He was the husband of John W. Rohrer.
James “Jim” was born February 4, 1941, in York, PA and was the son of the late James E. and Mildred S. (Eisenberger) Rabine.
He graduated in 1959 from William Penn Senior High School in York and later in 1963 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in art education. He was employed as a teacher for 37 years for Northern York County School District in Dillsburg, PA. Upon retirement, he was chairman of the fine arts department for the school district and past area chairman for the Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Arts Award program. James was an artist known for his talent in watercolors, collages and contemporary reliefs. He was a past member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen who exhibited his work at various juried arts shows including Penn State and Long’s Park in Lancaster. He owned and operated The Negative Space Studio in Dillsburg for 8 years. He was well-traveled, especially in Europe. He enjoyed collecting arts & crafts, particularly pottery. He would pick pieces to help beginning potters. He would create desk calendars with inspirational sayings and whimsical figures that he passed out. Jim was always asking birthdays and doing cards or small gifts for others, including doctor’s staff and restaurant servers.
He was a member of First Moravian Church in York.
In addition to his spouse, James is survived by his brother, John E. Rabine of Bettendorf, Iowa, nephews Matthew J. Rabine of Thomasville and Christopher A. Rabine and his wife Jennifer of Omaha, NE, great-niece Morgan C. Rabine Benham and her husband Turner of Monument, CO and great-nephews Andre J. Rabine and Ezekiel D. Rabine of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann Rabine.
His funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 28, 2025, with a Visitation from 2pm-3pm, at First Moravian Church, 39 North Duke Street, York, PA. Church off-street parking is available at C.S. Davidson lot opposite of 119 E. Philadelphia Street. Private family burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery in York. Leading the service per Jim’s personal request will be his friend, Reverend Stephen Nicholas, retired Moravian pastor. Arrangements have been entrusted to Leber Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Dover, PA.
