Fred Donald Reiss
YORK – Fred Donald Reiss, 94 of Springettsbury Township, York, PA, passed away, Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Wellspan York Hospital, York, PA. He was the husband of Mary E. (Livingston) Reiss of York, PA, whom together they enjoyed 56 years of marriage.
Mr. Reiss was born May 2, 1930, in York, PA and was the son of the late George and Mary (Kissinger) Reiss.
He retired as an elementary school principal from the York Suburban School District after 33 years of service. He served as Head Teacher of the former Elmwood School and as a principal of the former Heistand and Yorkshire Schools. He retired as principal of the East York Elementary School. Mr. Reiss had degrees from Millersville State University and the Pennsylvania State University. He also attended Franklin and Marshall College, Columbia University, Western Maryland College (now McDowell) and the University of Maryland. He was a member of the following organizations, Life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and the National Education Association. He also belonged to Rails to Trails Conservancy, The National Watch and Clock Collectors Association, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Farm and Natural Lands Trust of York County, Gathering Leaves Society of the York County Parks and the American Legion. He was also a member of the former University Club of York where he served on the Board of Directors. As a volunteer in the Library and Research Center of the National Watch and Clock Collectors Museum in Columbia, PA, Mr. Reiss was recognized as a volunteer of the year in 2001. Mr. Reiss was an avid sailboat racer, fisherman and bicyclist. He proudly served his country as a corporal in the Army of the United States Medical Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. Reiss is survived by his sons, Dan M. Brookhart and his wife Ellen of Lancaster, PA, Allan D. Brookhart and his wife Cherry of Sarasota, FL; four grandchildren; three nephews; three nieces; one step nephew; his brother, Max R. Reiss and his wife, Zona of York, PA, and his sister, Gloria Edwards of Gambier, OH.
His funeral service and burial will be private. His burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery in West York, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Leber Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Dover, PA.
